The Story of BULLS

An opportunity existed.

In early 2020, Made in Durham led a collaborative of organizations in Durham resulting in the creation of an initiative now known as BULLS. The initiatives purpose was to explore ways to scale and connect Durham’s Education-to-Career system to the Triangle’s high growth-high wage industry sectors.

The effort grew in response to concern that area talent demand was outpacing workforce development supply systems in the region , especially in specific growth industry sectors.

We began with community.

The BULLS collaborative engaged key institutions in the community that played a role in the current Education-to-Career system in a series of discussions to identify the most effective solutions.

We learned to scale.

The goal was to learn how to scale best practices while also addressing the system’s existing inequities, specifically for Durham’s young adults of color. The result was a BULLS System Scale Plan that identified the process for scaling existing programs and creating Academies within our scaled system for young adults of color and underserved populations.

Employing this process, the BULLS collaborative identified Biopharma Manufacturing as the most appropriate first industry sector to scale and create an Academy to support.

Life happens.

The most unique feature of the BULLS Life Sciences Academy is the inclusion of $10,000 Life Stipends. Each Academy participant is eligible for $10,000 in living expenses as they complete requirements over the 17 weeks of the BULLS Life Sciences Academy program.
