Dan McKinney serves as youth engagement strategist and racial equity lead for Made in Durham.

McKinney coordinates the work of the Made in Durham Youth Network, a diverse group of young people ages of 14 to 24 who infuse the voice and perspective of young people throughout the work of the partnership. He recruits and works with Youth Network members to help them develop skills to contribute to the work of the partnership, advocate for youth and develop as community leaders.

He also manages Made in Durham’s racial equity task force, which is working to identify strategies for overcoming racial bias in Durham that inhibits student success. McKinney brings to this work a deep understanding of historical and systemic barriers to youth success coupled with a commitment to empowering youth to create a more equitable Durham that enables all young people succeed.

McKinney previously served as history teacher and academic coach for students served by Student U, a college-access organization and Made in Durham partner that offers a pipeline of academic and social support services to help students succeed through middle school, high school and college.

As an academic coach with Student U, McKinney worked to cultivate academic skills among high school students by working with them one-on-one and by collaborating with parents, teachers and coworkers. As a teacher for Student U, he designed and taught courses on racism. Additionally, he serves on the leadership team of Organizing Against Racism–Durham.

McKinney holds Master of Theology degrees from Duke University and Dallas Theological Seminary.
