Deputy Director

About Made in Durham:

Made in Durham is a community partnership of engaged educators, business, government, nonprofits, youth and young adults aligning their resources and initiatives to create an education-to-career system that better equips Durham’s youth for career and life success and builds a stronger local workforce.  Our vision is that all Durham youth will complete a postsecondary credential and begin a rewarding career by age 25.

About this position:

The Deputy Director will report directly to the Executive Director of Made in Durham and will assist in managing all aspects of the organization. This position will be responsible for ensuring the goals of the organization are met across all three pillars of its work:  Education, Career, and Youth.  This will include managing the work in community partnerships, work-based learning, career pathways and youth engagement.  The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the work of education to career initiatives, and racial equity.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Management and Administration

  • Manage a team of four across strategy, programming, and marketing.
  • Support staff in achieving organizational goals and outcomes.
  • Develop relationships and interact with key partners and institutions key to the organizations success.
  • Assist Executive Director in fund raising and public presentations.
  • Assist Executive Director in management of monthly meetings of Executive and Management Committees, and quarterly Board of Directors Meetings.
  • Lead the Advisory Team’s monthly meetings and agendas in concert with the Co-Chairs.
  • Lead Special Initiatives as defined each year.

Strategy Development and Programming

  • Work with the Executive Director and staff to set Education, Career and Youth goals annually.
  • Work with staff to create data driven process for goal and fund raising reporting.
  • Provide on going expertise and support to the organizations efforts in community, corporate and youth partnership work.
  • Take leadership roles in conception and execution of initiatives in work-based learning, career pathways, innovative learning, disconnected youth re-engagement, and equity.
  • Conceptualize and curate unique youth engagement experiences.
  • Assist Executive Director in developing strategy and growth plans for Made in Durham.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate may come from a variety of backgrounds but should possess these attributes:

  • 2-3 years of work experience, including some management experience.
  • Relevant bachelors degree required with preference given to graduate degree (Master’s, MBA, PhD) or demonstrated experience in working with issues relevant to Made in Durham.
  • Content knowledge and mission-driven: The Deputy Director must not only have a passion for the mission but must also have – formally or otherwise – a strong grasp of the education to career system work. The successful candidate needs to understand the importance of equity and the commitment to equitable opportunity for youth that Made in Durham is founded on.
  • Entrepreneurial and creative: Candidate must take an entrepreneurial approach to the position and organization, employing a creative approach to conceive effective programming initiatives and pursue organizational strategy.
  • Goal-oriented: Candidate must be driven to achieve organizational objectives including growth in both the organization and the youth we seek to serve.
  • Teamwork and leadership: Candidate must manage and motivate the Made in Durham team, as well as work effectively with partner and key stakeholder organizational leadership.
  • Highly organized: Candidate must be able to effectively manage time in order to juggle multiple responsibilities.
  • Technology savvy, experience with content management systems (CMS), or willingness to be trained.
