Lorenza Wilkins serves as senior director of programs and operations, responsible for managing the process of aligning partner institutions to achieve Made in Durham’s vision to ensure all Durham youth complete high school, earn a post-secondary credential and secure a sustainable career by 25.

Wilkins also manages the work of Durham Futures, Made in Durham’s initiative to pilot and scale interventions that help “disconnected” youth – those who are not in school or working – get back on track and stay there.

He brings years of experience in talent development and nonprofit management focused on developing socio-economically disadvantaged youth, and is a dedicated advocate of youth empowerment and community development. A member of Biltmore’s Who’s Who among American Executives and Professionals, he has served for nearly two decades in the career training, learning and development and career progression of thousands of adults and youth across the United States.

Wilkins was talent advisor for CSX Transportation in Jacksonville, Fla., from 1998-2015. He served as program manager for Triangle Literacy Center and as president, chairman and chief executive officer of Compass Youth Center, a Warrenton mentoring program focused on providing sustainable pathways out of poverty for young people. There, he was lead coach for a FIRST Robotics Competition rookie high school team formed in rural Warren County that in its first year qualified for the North Carolina State Championship,

He is avid supporter and spokesperson for heightened awareness surrounding STEM education and received special recognition from the Southern Poverty Law Center. He is a member of the National Afterschool Association and National Society of Leadership and Success, and has volunteered with Shriner’s Hospitals, American Red Cross, United Way, The Bridges of Northeast Florida and the Food Bank of America.

A former student athlete (basketball) and former member of the North Carolina Central University School of Business’ 3.0 Club, Wilkins holds a BSBA and MBA from Columbia Southern University (Summa Cum Laude) and is pursuing a doctoral degree in Business Administration with a focus on project-based research.
