Michael Becketts, director of Durham County Department of Social Services, and Dan Kimberg, executive director of Student U, have been named to Made in Durham’s Advisory Team.

The Advisory Team of representatives from key partner organizations proposes strategy and ensures implementation for the Made in Durham partnership, which is creating an education-to-career system that ensures all Durham youth graduate from high school, complete a postsecondary credential and enter a career by age 25.

“We’re delighted to have Michael and Dan’s expertise, perspectives and partnership as we mobilize resources across Durham to help our young people achieve education and career success,” said Meredythe Holmes, executive director of Made in Durham.

Becketts joined Durham County social services in 2012 and provides leadership and direction for program development, leads organizational change and builds community partnerships that serve the department’s mission.

He moved to Durham from Baltimore, Md., where he served as deputy director of the Baltimore Department of Social Services. Among his major accomplishments was the implementation of strategies exiting more than 800 children from the foster care system. He previously served as deputy director of the State of Maryland’s Office of Licensing and Monitoring, social work director at Johns Hopkins infectious disease department and clinical manager for a sex offender treatment program.

Becketts holds master’s degrees in social work from University of Maryland and health administration from the University of Baltimore.

Kimberg collaborated with the Durham community to create Student U in 2005 as a Robertson Scholar at Duke University. Student U is a college-access organization that offers a pipeline of services to support students through middle school, high school and college.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Duke in a major he designed, Advocating for Educational Reform in Policy and Practice, he became Student U’s inaugural executive director.

Kimberg serves on the board of board of directors of 3DWomen and Book Harvest. In 2012, he wrote Sam’s School, a book that connects Student U’s core values to the life of his grandfather, Sam.
